Who I Am

I’m a basic Southern Californian, whose grandparents came from Canada, Mexico, Arizona, and Escondido. I was born in LA, to parents who became hippies in the late ’60’s, but I have lived in San Diego since 1972. I registered Libertarian in 1980 for my first voting experience and have been one ever since. I’ve been a husband since 1988 and a parent since 1993, my two most important roles.
I grew up poor–on food stamps and free lunches and without a car most of the time–in East San Diego. I went to Hoover High, SD City College and SDSU, where I graduated with honors. I recently retired from teaching math after nearly 30 years in Poway, Encinitas, and Carmel Valley. Before teaching, I had jobs ranging from beer delivery to pedicab driving. I’ve lived around San Diego county, from Ocean Beach to East San Diego, the last 30 years in Ramona and Poway.
I believe that it’s possible to be kind and honest at the same time–and that neither is complete without the other. I believe in personal freedom and I think that the rules of economics work whether a person believes in them or not. I believe that change is inevitable and necessary, and that when it’s balanced with care and humility it can make our world better.
